Why are SSA programs needed?
In 2007 53.5% of children in Harris County were considered “at risk” of dropping compared to 48.3% if children in Texas. A 2008 report identifes Houston Independent school District as having a graduation rate of 48.8 %. Faced with shrinking school budgets, many school districts are cutting teachers, support staff and school programs that served at risk and economically disadvantaged youth. Also, the number of youth involved in the juvenile justice system continues to increase. With a 62.1 recidivism rate for adjudicated youth in Harris County, there is a need for prevention program and support systems.
The goal of Student Success Agenda is to provide mentoring that empowers students for academic success and life. Working with schools, churches, businesses, professional associations and social services organizations we provide mentoring programs to increase student graduation rates, college enrollment, and career readiness.
Our united efforts will enhance our social and economic quality of our communities. Investing in Student Success Agenda will help reduce dropout rates of our participants and provide much needed prevention programs that teach youth with alternatives to gangs, drugs and crime. Also, your support helps us recruit and train mentors to become models for students
Curriculum
Academic Individual Mentoring (AIM)
This award winning program (Texas Association of Partners in Education Gold Award 2010) connects business professionals and community members to students on campuses to provide practical guidance and academic support for academic success. Mentors are provided training after clearing background checks and receive ongoing support to guide students to measurable success. Participating students receive additional learning opportunities for college and career explorations.
Journeymen/women (Boys to Men, Girls to Women)
This after school mentor program equips girls and boys with essential life skills for success. It provides practical guidance, tips and models for adolescent youth to wisely transition to young adulthood. Important concepts and skills are “caught” in this program such as teamwork, social skills, adhering to laws, rules, and boundaries. In a safe environment, students participate in recreation activities, support groups and have opportunities for open forums regarding coping skills, peer pressure, drug prevention, and other relevant youth issues.
Safe & Drug Free School Rally(s)
Empowering interactive school-wide assemblies and resources to equip students to prevent drugs and alcohol abuse among students. We teach students how to identify and overcome abuse, depression, eating disorders and bullying among students. A primary resource for the rally is a student planner that reinforces prevention. This planner is also provided to students as resources for crisis prevention and intervention.
